Tuesday night's all right for writing... and so is every other night. I'm here to show you how.
The forum didn't really take off, so the group's still going strong over on Facebook - see below! [JHJ, July 9th 2015]
So I expect there will be a slow and gradual uptake as I trickle information through several social media portals until we're the next big thing.
Welcome welcome. If you have any questions, here's where you should ask them. Or on our Facebook, which is here: www.facebook.com/groups/745392982235546/
I don't intend to spam you, but the point of the forum, as basic/generic as it is, is about building accountability, increasing your writing practice and getting you talking (even boasting) about your writing, whether it's how much you've done, how happy you are with it, or that you've been offered that big commission.
Who we are:
Tuesday Night Writes is a group of screenwriters/scriptwriters who meet weekly in Cardiff, of all levels of experience and from all backgrounds. We don't discriminate on any grounds, so if you write prose and you want to come along, please do that.
We are combining fun and social meetings with techniques and skills to develop your daily writing practice, skills which we have developed ourselves over years of struggle and toil. We don't profess to be masters at it, qualified in it, nor do we have any magic tricks. We do, however, offer support and most importantly - accountability.
You can choose to participate as much or as little as you want. But if you come along, you might as well join in. If you're writing you may as well show off about it!
Each week there will be a little talk, from me or someone else with writerly intent, about how to make writing more a part of your life, or different obstacles we can hopefully overcome. There will be a challenge to develop your practice each week and then there will be readings.
Yes. We're going to actually read what you've written. That's the whole point, isn't it?
There will be partner/small group work where you team up and read each other's stuff and give feedback directly. There will be group readings, where you volunteer a piece and other writers volunteer to read it aloud. As we develop we'll invite real proper actors to table read and perform short pieces. And then the group will rally round with feedback and thoughts. We will be writers, a writers group for writers. This is the real deal.
Whether you have a dozen fully-fledged feature scripts on your hard-drive, or whether you've never written a page, we will focus on short readings, short pieces, quick exercises and getting words out on the page. Some weeks we'll ask you to create new works, other times you'll be invited to bring completed pieces, but every week will be inclusive to all.
There will also be Script Editors whenever possible, vetted by me, who have professional experience and who will be available for hire through agreements with you, if you're looking to get to that next level.
We will be asking you to categorise yourself dependent on your current writing level (i.e. how much you can write per day), whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced. The higher your level, the greater your challenge each week. We want you to start a manageable habit (we're looking at only 5 minutes a day for the first month, perhaps even the first year) because experience shows that you'll be less likely to quit if your goals are attainable. We'll set specific themes and exercises, give hints on ways of working and ask you to experiment with methods you haven't tried before. But always, we'll be here, like the beanbag you collapse on when you've written your daily page and you need a lie down and a Toffee Crisp.
Does this all make sense? No? Then get in touch. Post comments below or in the Facebook group or Twitter or email or stop me in the street and ask WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS???
The answer is two-fold:
1) I will admit, I'm currently supposed to be writing a 5-Act breakdown for a script, so coming up with this idea has given me a wonderful diversion.
2) I will admit, I am newly finding my feet in daily techniques, enjoying a habit I tried for years to cultivate and I just know I work better when I collaborate, when I have the support of others. Because I'm a nice guy, I want to help you. Because I'm helping you, I will expect you to help me too.
See you next Tuesday,
Janine
